The 2 Series is a compact coupe/convertible within the BMW range. It uses foundations and DNA from the 1 Series, but is a much more style conscious affair when compared to its hatchback sibling.
BMW models tend to rise in size depending on their number, therefore as expected the 2 Series is slightly bigger than the 1 Series, although it is smaller than a 3 and 4 Series. Originally a 2-door coupe, the 2 Series is also available in a Convertible and a Gran Coupe version. There are also MPV alternatives too.

Engines and Driving Experience
BMW are renowned for their fine driving experience, and the 2 Series is no exception. No matter which body style you go for, the experience behind the wheel is one which you are sure to enjoy. Refinement is excellent and interior quality is smart and ergonomic, although the latest versions are much more striking due to their digital cockpits.
A choice of sporty petrol and economical diesel engines are available. Although it's worth noting that the diesel engines are not lacking when it comes to performance also. Petrol versions tend to be either 1.5 or 2.0-litres, although the M240i uses a more potent 3.0-litre and delivers seriously impressive performance, with 0-62mph possible in less than 5 seconds.
The 2.0-litre diesel is an excellent combination of both economy and performance, capable of over 60mpg.
Practicality and Running Costs
If you're in the market for a coupe or convertible, chances are you know you're not really going to benefit from decent practicality, although the 2 Series isn't bad at all and offers a decent sized boot. This is 390-litres in the Coupe and 280-litres in the Convertible. The most practical is the 430-litres offered in the larger Gran Coupe.
The Gran Coupe also offers 4-doors for easy access into the cabin along with good interior space, coming with 5 seats as standard. The Coupe and Convertible models offer 4 seats, and 2-door accessibility. Rear space isn't really ideal for adults, but it's not too bad for short journeys.
It is not uncommon to find used cars with service packs, therefore making servicing/maintenance a lot more affordable. General economy of the BMW 2 Series is excellent in the diesel versions, whilst petrol versions can also achieve over 40mpg.
Interior, Technology and Safety
The Gran Coupe is a brand-new generation of BMW 2 Series, it therefore benefits from a smart, widescreen infotainment screen, along with a digital instrument cluster. As standard you get a collision and pedestrian warning system, along with cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, automatic wipers and headlights.
The Coupe and Convertible are due to be replaced in 2021 to align with the Gran Coupe. Therefore interior will feel slightly outdated, but it could be argued that older models offer a more analogue feel - with simpler dials. The infotainment is still excellent, and has been a good feature of recent BMW models.
Standard safety on the Coupe and Convertible includes front, side, knee and head airbags as standard, along with Isofix child-seat attachments for the rear seats.
Is the BMW 2 Series right for me?
If you are after a great looking coupe or convertible, the BMW 2 Series is a fine contender. It offers premium looks and feel without the need to scream about its purpose. The choice of multiple body styles also means finding the perfect 2 Series is made much easier.
The rewarding driving experience of the 2 Series will set it apart from the competition, although those looking for more stability in winter may want to look at the Audi TT with its Quattro all-wheel drive, compared with the rear-wheel drive nature of the BMW 2 Series.
