All your car selling questions, answered

Selling your car can be a tricky process, but it doesn't have to be. We make it incredibly simple. Here are the answers to some of the most common questions that crop up when selling your car.

What documents and information do I need to bring?

To make the process even simpler for you, we ask that you provide a few mandatory details so that we can make your buying experience even easier. All we ask that you provide is:

  • Your vehicle's registration
  • The current mileage of your car
  • Basic contact information

When it comes to having the car inspected by one of our advisors, we will need you to provide some further information and documentation. On assessment you will need:

  • Your Driving Licence
  • A bank statement – addressed to your name and current home address dated within 3 months
  • Vehicle Registration V5 Document
  • The service history records (if applicable)
  • Valid finance settlement letter - showing final settlement figure and finance company bank details (if applicable)
  • All keys - including spares
  • Any accessories related to the use of the vehicle i.e. user manuals, locking wheel nut key, memory cards etc
I have outstanding finance on my car, can you still buy it?

Of course. We deal with finance settlements every day, so we can arrange the settlement of your current agreement.  Our associates will guide you through this process on the day, and the settlement amount will be deducted from the amount paid to you for the car.

How will you pay for my car?

It's simple. If you sell your car to us before 2pm, we will transfer the money into your account on the same working day, subject to an ID check. If you sell your car to us after 2pm, you'll receive your payment on the next working day.

Payment for sales completed over the weekend will be processed on Mondays, and payment for sales made on Bank Holidays will be processed on the Tuesday or next working day. There are no charges or admin costs so you'll get every penny of your car's value.

Is there a transaction fee?

Certainly not. Unlike some other car buying services, there is no transaction fee if you decide to sell to us regardless of the value of your car. If you would like more information on the service, please refer to our terms and conditions.

How do you work out the valuation?

Our valuations are generated based on the mileage and vehicle details that you provide and the following assumptions that we make about your car.

Will you buy a car I've owned for less than 12 months?

If you have owned the vehicle for less than 12 months, we will ask to see proof of purchase from a recognised dealer before we offer a valuation on your vehicle. Unfortunately, we are unable to purchase vehicles which have been bought at auction or from a salvage company.

If you have owned the vehicle for less than 6 months, we may also inspect your vehicle on a ramp prior to valuation.

Can I sell on behalf of someone who has passed away?

Yes, however there are different types of documentation required depending on your individual circumstance.

I've lost my V5 registration document, will you still buy my car?

Unfortunately we are unable to purchase any car without the original V5 document (logbook). If you do not have one you can obtain a replacement from the DVLA.

Do I leave my car with you if I agree to sell?

Yes. Once you’ve agreed to sell your car to us you will leave your car with our associates, who will arrange for your payment to be made. So, you'll need to organise a method of getting home.

My car is a non-runner, will you still buy it?
Yes! You will need to arrange getting your car down to us, and our associates will take care of the rest.
Will you collect my car?

Unfortunately we are unable to offer a collection service, so you will need to arrange getting your car to us.

However, once your car is with us in a dealership our dedicated associates will be able to assist you throughout the selling process.

My car has a cherished plate, can I still sell it?

We’re happy to buy your car with its cherished plate still on.  However in the more likely event that you want to keep your plate, it’s easy to reassign it to another car or put it on retention. This would need to be done prior to selling your car to us to find out more about your personalised registration please visit the DVLA website.

Can you pay more than other car buying sites?

Other 3rd party online valuation tools take a cut from your car's value before they sell them on to auction houses, who then take a cut before selling these cars to us. By cutting out the middlemen and selling your car directly to Evans Halshaw, we can pay more for your car.

Do I have to make a purchase to sell my car?

Nope! You can use our sell your car service without having to purchase a car from us.
