The X-Trail is Nissan's flagship SUV. Not only is it the Japanese manufacturers best-selling model worldwide, it's one of the best-selling SUVs too. In fact, according to Nissan "in FY16 the X-Trail was the world's most popular SUV, with 766,000 vehicles sold - more than any other rival model". Impressive.

With previous generations offering style, excellent comfort and generous equipment levels, not to mention fantastic build quality and decent off-road capabilities, it's easy to see why the X-Trail has been a roaring success the world over. This new model has a lot to live up to. However, this latest generation X-Trail ensures that the predecessor's successful traits have not only been included, but enhanced and upgraded.

Exterior

Firstly, the previous generations 'typical' boxy 4x4 profile has been replaced by a sharper, more sophisticated design, incorporating the latest 'V-motion' grille and, depending on variant, uses an all-new headlamp cluster set-up which includes either halogen or full LED lights - complimented by an enhanced version of the X-Trail's signature 'boomerang' daytime running lights. New details elsewhere include the addition of chrome detailing along the lower parts of the doors and on the redesigned rear. Details are important, and although minor, the X-Trail's parking sensors now sit flush in the rear bumper which shows the attention to detail which has been adopted on this all-new model.

Interior

It's the same story within the interior, which includes a higher standard of fit and finish, with higher quality materials used throughout. A prominent new steering wheel design greets the driver at first sight, in which the design is similar to that of other enhanced models. Incorporating a flat-bottom for a sporty feel, the design also gives greater convenience entering and exiting the X-Trail's driver's seat. Gloss black detailing on the air vents, as well as leather knee pads for extra driver and passenger comfort finish off the interior enhancements nicely.

Of course, range-topping trim levels include some extremely premium features such as front and rear seat heating and a smart two-tone leather interior. The beauty of the X-Trail is also complimented by its superior practicality offering best-in-class legroom amongst the rear, as well as fantastically ergonomic storage solutions. The X-Trail is also available with either five or seven seats.

Furthermore, boot space in the all-new X-trail has been increased to 565 litres, up from 550 litres in the X-trail's predeceasing five-seater variant, while the boot space in the seven-seater remains the same. What makes the X-Trail excellent for families is the flexible luggage board system, which enables nine separate configurations using shelves and dividers, including a hidden compartment which is ideal at keeping your valuables safe and out of sight.

Infotainment

Entertainment and kit is important when keeping the family happy too. A premium audio experience can be selected with the X-Trail, complete with an eight-speaker BOSE® sound system, along with (for the first time as standard) DAB Radio, and available on certain variants - an ultra-modern touch screen incorporating satellite navigation. Other standard features on the X-Trail range include cruise control, Bluetooth, alloy wheels, and electric folding/heated door mirrors.

Performance

Performance-wise, the new X-Trail comes with either a 1.6-litre diesel offering 130PS paired with either a 2WD or 4WD drivetrain, along with a 2.0-litre 177PS engine, again with a choice of 2WD or 4WD. A 1.6-litre petrol is also available with 163PS and 2WD only. All variants offer a strong fuel economy and brilliant refinement.

Finally, to ensure Nissan stays ahead of the game, Nissan is showcasing ProPILOT on the all-new X-Trail. ProPILOT is a package of advanced active technologies that take control of the steering, acceleration and braking when using a lane on a motorway or dual carriageway, either in traffic or while cruising for additional safety and comfort. This impressive technology is further complimented by Intelligent Emergency Braking, Stand Still Assist, Intelligent Park Assist and Traffic Sign Recognition.

The all-new X-Trail looks set to build even further upon its impressive success for Nissan.
