Engines and Driving Experience
A small selection of engines were offered in the Mokka X throughout its production, which were narrowed down to just two options by the end of its lifespan.
The entry-level 1.6-litre petrol engine on the pre-facelift Mokka was decent enough. It wasn't necessarily the fastest thing on the road, producing just 108bhp, but it felt eager around town and could return a shade over 50mpg.
Better suited to those who often travel beyond the constraints of the city, the turbocharged 1.4-litre petrol engine with 138bhp offers more flexibility on the move. Up to 40mpg is achievable with this unit.
Long distance travelers will no doubt enjoy the fuel savings brought by the 1.6-litre diesel engines, with close to 70mpg attainable with minimal effort.
Driving a Mokka X isn't likely to set the pulses racing, but it offers excellent levels of comfort and feels reassuringly stable at motorway speeds. The respectable visibility and raised driving position are welcome traits, and make for a well-rounded family car.
Practicality and Running Costs
Despite being a relatively compact package, the Mokka X offers plenty of head room inside. Leg space is a little bit tighter in comparison, but children will be perfectly fine. Suited to family life, there are plenty of cubbyholes and storage compartments in which you can store various bottles and crisp packets.
Having been based on the Corsa supermini, the Mokka X doesn't have the biggest boot in the world. Although, at 356 litres it's hardly what you'd call tiny. The 60:40 split rear folding seats and wide boot opening are certain to make life easier when storing everyday items, such as a pushchair.
Running costs are unlikely to be too offensive, with the Mokka X occupying insurance groups between 13 and 16 (50 is the highest). Tyres and other consumables are affordable, while discounted servicing is available through Evans Halshaw Vauxhall once you've signed up to Vauxhall Service Club.
Interior, Technology and Safety
Comfortable and ergonomically friendly, the Mokka X's interior deserves high praise for nailing the basics. Decent materials feature throughout, and each model comes with generous levels of equipment.
A 7-inch touchscreen features as standard on all models, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto offering slick smartphone connectivity. Vauxhall also kindly threw in cruise control, air-conditioning, automatic windscreen wipers and electric windows all-round, too.
Higher spec models get an upgraded infotainment system, which features satellite navigation, alongside heated seats and tinted rear windows. Go for the range-topping Ultimate model and you'll get 19-inch alloy wheels and sportier exterior touches.
The Mokka X scored highly for adult and child occupant protection, thanks to safety equipment and driver aids including:

Don't discount the Mokka X if you're after an affordable and practical entry into the world of SUVs. After all, it's easy to drive thanks to the compact dimensions, but you get extra space compared to a conventional hatchback. With flexible engines and plenty of safety kit, the Mokka X makes a fine family car.
There's plenty of rivals to choose from in this segment. The Renault Captur offers a bigger boot (422 litres), making it worth a look if you need the added practicality. A Peugeot 2008 offers more style and a classier interior design, while it's hard to ignore the Nissan Juke at this price point.
