Used DS 3 For Sale

In production between 2009 and 2019, the DS 3 was a supermini that made a big impression because it offered a unique blend of affordability and style.

The DS 3, which was sold under the Citroën brand before DS Automobiles became a standalone manufacturer in 2015, faced stiff competition from the likes of the popular Ford Fiesta and Vauxhall Corsa upon release. However, its unique appearance and well-built interior made it a success over the course of its lifetime.

There are plenty of examples to choose from on the used car market, with each car offering:

  • Good practicality
  • Stylish appearance
  • Fun driving dynamics
  • Affordable running costs

Engines and Driving Experience

Those looking for a responsive supermini are spoilt for choice with the likes of the MINI Hatchback and Ford Fiesta. However, the DS 3 offers similar amounts of fun thanks to its weighty steering and excellent levels of grip. The car has no issue settling down into a comfortable commuter, either.

There are a diverse mix of petrol and diesel engines on offer. A handful of three-cylinder engines producing 80bhp, 108bhp and 128bhp are joined by a couple of turbocharged 1.6-litre engines, which produce 162bhp and 205bhp respectively. All but the punchiest engines on this list offer over 60mpg on a combined cycle.

Diesel options comprise a duo of 1.6-litre BlueHDi units that are available with either 99bhp or 118bhp. Performance isn't their strong suit, but they can be forgiven for this because they can return around 80mpg. A manual gearbox is standard, although a 6-speed auto is available depending on model year and specification.

Practicality and Running Costs

A potential drawback is that the DS 3 is only available with three doors. Gaining access to the rear can be a bit more troublesome compared to 5-door rivals such as the MINI Hatchback and Audi A1. However, the doors do open nice and wide, making it possible to fit a child's seat without too much trouble.

The 285-litre boot is bigger than a number of rivals, namely the MINI Hatchback (211 litres) and Fiat 500 (185 litres). It doesn't quite pip the Renault Clio (300 litres) for space, but it's not far off. The rear seats split-fold for maximum convenience, and can lay down to reveal 980 litres of space.

Servicing and maintenance costs shouldn't be too offensive, and can be completed at any of our authorised Citroën retailers or DS Salons. Insurance groups are slightly higher than some rivals, with the DS 3 largely occupying groups between 10 and 22 (50 being the highest). However, the lower cost of the car offsets this.

Interior, Technology and Safety

ds3 with a BROWN interior

The DS 3 utilises a variety of high-quality materials throughout its cabin, making it a pleasant place to spend time. In addition, the seats offer generous amounts of comfort and adjustability. Wind and road noise is well-contained, although models with the 17-inch alloy wheels do result in slightly more sound filtering into the cabin.

Standard equipment across the range is largely very good. Bluetooth and an infotainment system allow you to connect your smart devices easily enough, while LED daytime running lights and cruise control are welcome features on any journey. Some models benefitted from sat-nav and Apple CarPlay, so it's worth keeping an eye out for them.

Safety is well-accounted for, with the DS 3 available with the following features:

  • Autonomous emergency braking
  • Electronic stability control
  • Front and passenger airbags
  • Reversing camera
  • Traction control system

Is the DS 3 right for me?

Those wanting a stylish supermini that's practical, affordable and fun to drive aren't exactly short for choice. Although, the DS 3 offers a compelling alternative because it has a premium edge without the price tag to match. It's full of character and it's easy to live with. In short, you can't go wrong.

If the DS 3 isn't your cup of tea then you may want to consider the Ford Fiesta; it's a best-seller for a reason. The Vauxhall Corsa is another competent all-rounder that's loaded with kit for good measure. If you want something premium, look at the Audi A1 and MINI hatchback.
