The MPG Marathon is designed to find out how efficient a variety of vehicles can be and how many miles they can do per gallon compared to what manufacturers quote.

In the MPG Marathon 2017, the all-new Ford Fiesta surpassed the records for both petrol and diesel cars by hitting an incredible 97.1 and 122mpg respectively on a route through the middle of England, which was more than 350 miles long.

The Fiesta models used were a 1.0 (125PS) EcoBoost Titanium petrol and a 1.5 TDCi 120PS diesel. The all-new Ford Fiesta's efficiency comes from its 1.0-litre 3-cylinder EcoBoost petrol engine, power expected from a 1.6 engine, yet with better fuel economy and CO2 emissions.

The benchmark was determined five years ago by the Ford supermini at 108.8mpg, meaning the Fiesta has been raised by a whopping 13.2mpg - a big target for next year!

The petrol Fiesta was driven by Andy Dawson and Andrew Marriot, ex-works rally team members, whilst the diesel was driven by Paul Clifton and Ian McKean. The petrol and diesel versions exceeded their official average mpg number by 48.3% and 51.2%.

To effectively measure the efficiency of the all-new Ford Fiesta, the teams followed Ford's eco-driving tips:

  1. Service and check oil frequently - well maintained cars run smoothly
  2. Tyre pressure checked monthly - underinflated tyres can raise full consumption
  3. Reduce unnecessary heaviness in car or boot
  4. Remove roof racks with no luggage and keep windows closed - wind resistance can increase car fuel consumption
  5. Resist harsh acceleration and braking
  6. Use higher gears when accelerating

Other cars topping the MPG Marathon leader boards this year was the 1.3-litre Honda Jazz i-VTEC petrol which gained 'Most Improved' for its 88.7mpg, a 60% improvement. The Hyundai Ioniq Electric achieved 6.2 miles per kilowatt-hour, a 15% increase.
